From January 18th to 20th, the Underwater Systems and Technology Laboratory from FEUP, OceanScan MST, and the Portuguese Navy (Mine Warfare Diving Unit nº3 and the Hydrographic Institute) performed several joint tests to evaluate the performance of LAUV vehicles on sidescan sonar and magnetometer surveys.

FEUP Reforça Cooperação com a Noruega

A Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) recebeu no dia 17 de Novembro o Embaixador da Noruega, Anders Erdal, que se deslocou ao Porto com a sua comitiva, por ocasião do evento Business2Sea. Durante o encontro, o Laboratório de Sistemas e Tecnologia Subaquática (LSTS) da FEUP teve a oportunidade de dar a conhecer o trabalho desenvolvido na área dos veículos autónomos e de apresentar os resultados já alcançados ao nível do projeto Networked Ocean (NetOcean), financiado pelo EEA Grants.

Uma equipa de investigadores da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) está a participar no “Rapid Environmental Picture 2016” (REP16) desde o dia 5 de julho. Trata-se de um exercício anual que tem por objetivo testar, avaliar e validar os veículos autónomos não-tripulados em rede em ambientes operacionais definidos de acordo com as especificações da Marinha Portuguesa. Esta é a sétima edição do REP16 que está a decorrer ao largo da costa de Sesimbra e Setúbal, até dia 31 de julho.

As in previous years, LSTS and the Portuguese Navy are once again co-organizing REP16 exercise. This year, among the participants are CMRE, the Belgian Navy, SPAWAR and Oceanscan-OMT. Observing this exercise will be members from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, NASA and JPI Oceans.

Sérgio Ferreira and Paulo Dias participated in the Gunnerus exercises in Trondheim from 24th of April to the 30th of April. The experiment served as a first trial in the MBR radio integration that will be tested during the Networked Oceans project. The initial integration with X8 UAVs was successful and now must be extended to other systems in the toolchain.

In July we were at Azores, for the REP 15 exercise. There we put once again our systems to test, responding to a series of challenges.

Illustrative 3D Visualization of Networked Vehicles Systems, is a master thesis by Yekaterina Kirilyuk, which aimed to create a three-dimensional illustrative visualization to convey the concept of real missions executed by means of robotic vehicles to the technical and non-technical public.

From 6th to 29th of July, the exercise REP Atlantic 15 will take place in Azores. Organized by LSTS and the Portuguese Navy this exercise aims to push further our capacity to operate and control a network of underwater, surface and aerial autonomous vehicles and systems.

REP14-Atlantic stands for Recognized Environmental Picture (REP) Atlantic 2014. REP14-Atlantic is a joint exercise of the Portuguese Navy, the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP). 
REP14-Atlantic is a large experiment to be conducted in the Lisbon Naval Base and off the coasts of Sesimbra and Sines, in Portugal, from 7 to 24 July 2014. It includes several Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with different sensors and acoustic payloads, which will be deployed from Portuguese Navy ships NRP (“Navio da Republica Portuguesa” i.e. Ship of the Portuguese Republic) Pégaso, NRP Auriga, submarine NRP Arpão and the NATO Research Vessel Alliance.
