Marine Robotics Summer School

Between the 19th and 30th of last July, at FEUP's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), the Summer School dedicated to marine robotics took place. This international summer school, co-organized by MIT Portugal, LSTS, University of Minho and Colab +Atlantic, had the participation of 15 students from different areas of knowledge, from engineering to oceanography. In a multidisciplinary combination of workshops, talks and practical classes, it was an opportunity to introduce students to different perspectives and knowledge about robotics, control, vehicles and autonomous systems, as well as their practical applications related to oceanography, biology, among other subjects.

Over the two weeks, the students built, as a team, an educational glider, which allowed them to learn, in practice, the basic principles of their movement, as well as the basic application of controllers to this type of systems. All built gliders passed the FADEUP pool test with distinction.

There was also time to test the LSTS LAUVs in the Port of Leixões, based on the knowledge acquired about the LSTS Toolchain software for the control and command of this type of vehicles throughout the summer school. It was, for sure, the best way to end two intense weeks of learning that will certainly have been worthwhile for all present, students, teachers and speakers.

Marine Robotics Summer School

Entre os dias 19 e 30 do passado mês de Julho decorreu, no Departamento de Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores (DEEC) da FEUP, a Escola de Verão dedicada à robótica marinha. Esta summer school internacional, co-organizada pelo MIT Portugal, o LSTS, a Universidade do Minho e o Colab +Atlantic, teve a participação de 15 alunos de diferentes áreas do conhecimento, desde a engenharia à oceanografia. Numa combinação multidisciplinar entre workshops, palestras e aulas práticas, foi uma oportunidade de dar a conhecer aos alunos diferentes perspetivas e conhecimentos sobre robótica, controlo, veículos e sistemas autónomos assim como as suas aplicações praticas ligadas à oceanografia, biologia, entre outras disciplinas.

Ao longo das duas semanas, os alunos construíram, em equipa, um glider educativo, que lhes permitiu aprender, na prática, os princípios básicos do seu movimento, assim como a aplicação básica dos controladores a este tipo de sistemas. Todos os gliders construídos passaram com distinção no teste na piscina da FADEUP

Houve ainda tempo para testarem os LAUVs do LSTS no Porto de Leixões, tirando partindo dos conhecimentos adquiridos acerca da LSTS Toolchain de software para o controlo e comando deste tipo de veículos ao longo da summer school. Foi, com certeza, a melhor forma de terminar duas semanas intensas de aprendizagem que, certamente, terão valido a pena para todos os presentes, alunos, professores e palestrantes.
